# Shaving vs Waxing vs Hair Removal Cream: The Honest Pros and Cons

Shaving, waxing and hair removal cream all get rid of unwanted hair, and each one is the right answer for somebody. Waxing lasts longest. Hair removal cream is painless and needs no blade. Shaving is the cheapest, the quickest and the easiest to fit around your life. We sell razors, so you know where we land, but this is a fair look at all three (plus sugaring), with the trade-offs laid out so you can pick the one that suits your skin type, your budget and your patience. In the end it comes down to personal preference.

## Key takeaways

- **Waxing lasts longest,** usually three to four weeks, because it pulls hair out from the root.\[1\] The price is pain, salon costs and growing the hair out between sessions.
- **Hair removal cream lasts a little longer than shaving,** because it breaks the hair down chemically rather than cutting it.\[2\] It can irritate sensitive skin, so patch test first.
- **Shaving lasts the shortest time,** a day to three days before stubble shows\[1\], but it is quick, painless when done well and the cheapest over a year.
- **Sugaring** works like waxing with a sugar paste, and some people find it a little gentler.
- **For most men’s body and face hair,** shaving with a sharp blade and a proper shaving cream is the easiest everyday option.

## How each method works

The difference between them comes down to where the hair is removed.

Painless, quick and cheaper than the salon. [The Bearded Colonel](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk) posts fresh five-blade refills on the schedule you choose, from £1.75 a refill.

[See the plans](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/join/)

**Shaving** cuts the hair at the skin’s surface with a sharp razor blade. The hair root is untouched, so the hair grows back quickly, but nothing is pulled and there are no chemicals. Here we mean a cartridge razor with warm water and shaving cream, rather than electric razors or disposable razors used dry.

**Waxing** spreads warm or hot wax over the hair, then pulls it off sharply (with a cloth strip, or once the wax has set), taking the hair out of the hair follicles. The hair has to grow back from below the skin, which takes weeks. A waxing treatment also takes some dead skin cells with it, so it works partly as an exfoliant.\[1\]

**Hair removal cream**, also called depilatory cream, uses chemicals (usually thioglycolic acid or one of its salts) that break down the keratin in the hair so it can be wiped away. It does not remove the hair at the root, but the hair grows back more slowly than after shaving.\[2\] These hair removers are sold as creams, lotions and sprays.

**Sugaring** uses a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice and water. Like waxing, it pulls hair from the root.

## Shaving vs waxing vs hair removal cream at a glance

This table sums up the main trade-offs. Everyone’s hair grows at a different rate, so treat the timings as a rough guide.

The right one depends on what you care about most.

## Is waxing better than shaving?

It depends on what “better” means to you. Here is the honest version.

![Beautician in pink gloves waxing a client's arm in a salon](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/beautician-waxing-arm-in-salon-1024x682.jpg)**Where waxing wins.** It lasts far longer. Because the hair comes out by the root, you can go weeks between sessions instead of days. Regrowth also comes back with a natural tapered tip, so it feels softer than shaved stubble, which has a blunt end.\[3\] Over time, waxing can lead to hair growing back thinner\[1\], though that varies from person to person.

**Where shaving wins.**

- **Pain.** A shave with a sharp blade and a proper shaving cream does not hurt. Waxing does, especially on sensitive areas like the chest, underarms and below the belt. If you have a low pain tolerance, that alone may decide it.
- **Cost.** A razor and refills cost a fraction of regular salon waxing over a year.
- **Timing.** You can shave whenever you like. Waxing needs the hair to grow to a certain length first, so you spend part of every cycle with visible stubble.
- **Time.** A few minutes in the shower against a longer session, often with a booking and a trip.
- **The face.** Waxing a beard is not a realistic option for most men. Facial hair is coarse and dense, and shaving is how the face gets done.
- **Learning curve.** Almost anyone can shave well. Waxing at home takes practice and can be patchy.

**Skin reactions.** Both can cause skin irritation. Shaving with a blunt blade, dry skin or too much pressure leads to nicks, razor burn and ingrown hairs. Waxing can cause inflamed follicles, irritation and ingrown hairs, and hot wax can burn. Skip it on irritated or sunburnt skin.\[1\] In skin folds it is hard to do well.

**The verdict.** If you want silky smooth skin for weeks at a time and do not mind the pain or the price, waxing is better. For everyday, flexible, low-cost hair removal, shaving is.

Shaving does not give you thicker hair, either. It only feels coarser because the cut end is blunt\[3\], and the root of the hair is untouched.\[4\] Our guide on [whether shaving makes hair thicker](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/blog/will-shaving-make-hair-thicker-debunking-the-myth/) explains why.

## Hair removal cream vs shaving

Depilatory cream appeals because it is painless and there is no blade near your skin. It has real downsides too.

![Woman in a towel sitting on a bed and smoothing cream onto her shin](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/woman-applying-cream-to-legs-1024x670.jpg)**Does hair removal cream last longer than shaving?** A little. The hair grows back more slowly than after shaving, but faster than after waxing.\[2\]

**The upsides of depilatory cream:**

- no pain, no pulling and no cuts
- works on any hair length
- the regrowth can feel a touch softer than shaved stubble

**The downsides:**

- the chemicals that dissolve hair can irritate skin, and if left on too long they can cause chemical burns\[2\]
- a strong smell
- messy, and you have to wait for it to work
- coarse hair, like many men’s chest or leg hair, can need longer or a second go
- creams are made for specific areas, so check the label before using one anywhere sensitive, and never use a body cream on your face\[2\]

Even the best hair removal creams need care. Always do a patch test on a small area first\[2\], follow the timing on the pack and use the included spatula or a damp cloth to remove it, then rinse with cold water. Do not use it on broken, sunburnt or irritated skin, and never straight after shaving.

**Hair removal cream vs shaving, in short:** cream wins on pain free hair removal and lasts slightly longer. Shaving wins on speed, cost, control and being far less likely to cause a chemical reaction.

## Sugaring hair removal

Sugaring is an old method that has come back into fashion. A paste of sugar, lemon juice and water is spread on the skin and flicked off, pulling the hair out from the root.

![Therapist in purple gloves applying sugar paste to a client's leg with a wooden stick](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sugaring-paste-on-leg-1024x682.jpg)- **How long it lasts:** about the same as waxing.
- **Pain:** similar to waxing, though some people find it a little gentler.
- **Who it suits:** people who want waxing results but find hot wax too harsh, or who prefer simple ingredients.
- **Downsides:** like waxing, the hair has to grow out first, salon sessions cost money, and doing it at home takes practice.

## The real cost over a year

Cost is where shaving wins most clearly, so it is worth spelling out.

**Shaving.** A razor handle is a one-off. After that you are buying blades and shaving cream. With our Classic subscription, refills work out at £2.19 to £2.50 each, and on VIP they come down to £1.75 in an 8-pack. A cartridge is good for about five to seven shaves before it should be changed, so even shaving body hair across larger areas as well as the face, the yearly spend is modest. A 75ml tin of our shaving cream is £8.

**Waxing.** At-home kits are cheaper but messy and harder to get right. Salon waxing, unlike shaving, is a cost every few weeks, per area, for as long as you keep it up, and doing legs, chest or back regularly adds up fast over a year. Prices vary widely by area and salon, so check what your local salons charge before you commit.

**Hair removal cream.** You need a new tube or bottle regularly, and coarse body hair can use it up quickly. It usually sits between shaving and salon waxing.

## Which method suits which area?

For men, the choice often changes from one part of the body to another.

- **Face.** Shaving, almost always. Waxing and creams are not designed for a full beard of facial hair.
- **Chest and stomach.** Shaving or trimming is quickest; waxing lasts longer if you can take the pain. Our guide on [how to shave your chest](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/blog/how-to-shave-chest-hair/) covers the routine.
- **Legs.** All three work. Shaving is easiest for large areas you want to keep up. See [should men shave their legs](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/blog/should-men-shave-their-legs/), or our [tips for shaving legs and the bikini area](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/blog/7-ways-to-avoid-shaving-rash-on-legs-and-bikini-area/).
- **Arms.** Shaving or trimming is easiest, and nothing changes permanently if you stop. Our guide on [whether men should shave their arms](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/blog/should-men-shave-their-arms/) covers the pros and cons.
- **Back.** Hard to reach yourself. Waxing at a salon, or a long-handled body groomer, are the usual routes.
- **Underarms.** Shaving or trimming. Waxing works but is painful there, and cream can irritate.
- **Below the belt.** The most sensitive skin of all. Many men trim rather than remove hair completely. If you shave, go with the grain and use plenty of shaving cream. Waxing here is best left to a professional.

## How to get the most from shaving

If you choose shaving, these habits give better shaving results and less irritation.

1. **Shave in or after a warm shower,** when the hair is soft. If you cannot, hold a warm, damp towel on the area for a minute or two.
2. **Use a proper shaving cream,** not soap. It cushions the blade and keeps the skin from drying out.
3. **Use a sharp blade.** A blunt one tugs, and that is a common cause of irritation and ingrown hairs. Our guide on [how often to change your razor](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/blog/how-often-should-you-change-your-razor/) has the signs.
4. **Go with the grain,** with light pressure and short strokes.
5. **Moisturise afterwards** with something plain and fragrance-free, such as an aloe vera gel, to keep the skin soft.

If bumps are your main complaint with shaving, our [razor bumps guide](https://beardedcolonel.co.uk/blog/razor-bumps-causes-treatments-prevention/) covers how to stop them.

## Questions people ask

### Is waxing better than shaving?

Waxing lasts much longer, often weeks of hairless skin, and regrowth feels softer. Shaving is painless, far cheaper over a year, needs no regrowth period and fits into a few minutes in the shower. For long gaps between sessions, wax. For everyday flexibility and cost, shave.

### Does hair removal cream last longer than shaving?

A little. Depilatory cream breaks the hair down chemically, and the hair grows back more slowly than after a shave.\[2\] It does not last anywhere near as long as waxing or sugaring.

### Is hair removal cream bad for your skin?

Not for everyone, but the chemicals can irritate, and if left on too long they can cause chemical burns. People with sensitive or damaged skin should avoid them.\[2\] Patch test first, follow the timing on the pack, and do not use it on broken or freshly shaved skin.

### What is sugaring hair removal?

A method that uses a paste of sugar, lemon juice and water to pull hair out from the root. Results last about as long as waxing, and some people find it a little less painful.

### Does waxing make hair grow back thinner?

Waxing pulls hair from the hair root, so regrowth has a tapered tip. Over time it can lead to hair growing back thinner\[1\], but it varies a great deal and is not guaranteed. Shaving does not make hair thicker either way.

### Can I shave between waxing appointments?

You can, but shaving cuts the hair short, so it may be too short for your next wax to grip. If you plan to keep waxing, try to leave the area alone between sessions.
