How to cut one, in four steps

What makes a beard a circle beard
The connection. A circle beard is a continuous loop: the moustache runs down at both corners of the mouth and meets the chin beard, so there is unbroken hair all the way around.
Break that loop and the style changes name. Leave gaps either side of the mouth and you have a Van Dyke. Drop the moustache and you have a goatee. Extend the chin section along the jaw and you are heading toward an anchor.
The chin section is rounded rather than pointed, and it sits on the chin itself rather than hanging below it. That roundness is the second half of the definition, and it is what makes a full circle beard read as softer than its neighbours.
Circle beard styles
Classic circle beard. An even ring, short, with the chin section rounded. The reference version.
Full circle beard. The same shape carried at more length, with a wider band around the mouth. More presence, and it suits a bigger face.
Light stubble circle beard. The full outline held at a few days' growth. Softer, quicker to maintain, and much more forgiving of uneven facial hair.
Circle beard with stubbled cheeks. The ring kept longer with short stubble on the cheeks rather than bare skin. The most modern reading and the least severe.
Thin circle beard. A narrow band all the way round, kept close. Sharper and more precise, and it suits finer facial hair because there is less area to fill.
Extended circle beard. The ring plus a little hair carried back along the jaw. The step between a circle beard and an anchor.

A circle beard is cut rather than styled, so the kit is short.
A guarded beard trimmer sets the length of the whole ring. A detail trimmer or a bare blade cuts the outer edge, which is the line that decides whether the circle beard looks precise or approximate. A razor takes the cheeks and neck down so the contrast is real.
A comb pulls the beard hair flat before you cut, and beard oil goes into the skin underneath afterwards.
Nothing else. This is one of the few beard styles for men that needs no wax, no balm and no product beyond oil.
Who it suits
A circle beard adds weight to the lower face and takes it off the sides, so it lengthens and narrows. Face shape decides how useful that is.
Round. The best fit. The vertical emphasis counteracts the width, and the ring gives the mouth area some structure.
Square. Good, because the rounded chin softens a hard jaw rather than doubling up on it. This is where a circle beard beats a Van Dyke.
Oval. Works without adjustment.
Long or oblong. The one to be careful with. You are adding length to a long face, so keep the chin section short and the ring tight rather than letting it hang.
Heart. Helpful. Weight at the chin balances a wider forehead.
Is a circle beard attractive? That is a question the search data asks rather than one anyone can answer for you. What can be said is why it is worn so widely: it suits more face shapes than most beard styles for men, and it is one of the few that reads as tidy without reading as fussy.
The other reason is that it forgives thick facial hair and fine facial hair about equally. A thick growth fills the ring easily. Finer growth suits a thin circle beard, which needs less density to look deliberate. Very few beard styles work at both ends of that range.
Growing it
Three to four weeks before shaping.
You need the moustache and the chin to come in together, because the whole style depends on them meeting. Grow both, keep the cheeks and neck shaved throughout, and do not cut anything until the growth stops changing.
If your moustache comes through much thinner than your chin beard, the connection at the corners will be the weak point. Growing an extra fortnight usually fixes it, and if it does not, a goatee suits you better than a circle beard does.
Shaping it
Dry facial hair, combed down.
Set the length. Take the whole ring to one length with a guarded trimmer. Even length is what makes the loop read as a single shape rather than as a moustache and a chin beard that happen to touch.
Shape the chin. Round, not pointed, and sitting on the chin rather than below it. The bottom edge of the circle is roughly where the chin starts to curve under.
Check the corners. Where the moustache meets the chin beard, the hair should be continuous and the same length. Thin corners are the most common way a circle beard looks unintentional.
Shave the cheeks and neck. With a razor for real contrast, unless you are wearing the stubbled version.
Tidy the moustache off the lip line.
Keeping it
Every three to four days for the shape, which makes a circle beard noticeably less work than a Van Dyke or a Balbo.
That is the practical argument for it. There are no gaps to hold open, so nothing collapses if you skip a day. What needs attention is the outer edge, which creeps outward, and the cheeks, which need shaving on their own schedule.
Once a week, check the ring is still even all the way round and the chin section has not started to point or drop. A precise circle beard is a weekly job rather than a daily one, which is the whole argument for choosing it over its neighbours.
A messy circle beard is usually not a cutting problem at all. It is an outer edge that has been left three weeks, at which point the ring has widened and the shape has gone.
Beard oil into the skin underneath if it gets tight, and comb the beard hair down before trimming so you cut it at its real length.
What goes wrong
The ring widens. It creeps outward until it is a short full beard with shaved cheeks. Re-cut the outer edge weekly.
The chin section drops. Left long it hangs below the chin and the circle stops being a circle.
The corners thin out. Usually from over-trimming where the moustache meets the chin. Leave those two points alone and cut around them.
The cheeks get neglected. As with every style in this family, the bare skin is doing half the work.
Circle beard, goatee, Van Dyke and Balbo
All four are chin-led and they get confused constantly.
A goatee is the loosest of the four: chin hair, moustache optional, connection optional.
A circle beard is specifically joined and specifically rounded.
