How to cut one, in four steps

What counts as stubble
Anything from about half a millimetre to ten. Past that you are into a short beard, where the hair lies down rather than standing up, and the whole character changes.
The defining feature is uniformity. Facial hair that happens because you did not shave is not a stubble beard style, it is a few days of growth, and the difference is visible immediately. Stubble that has been cut to one length across the face, with a neckline and a cheek line, reads as deliberate.
Stubble lengths
Five o'clock shadow, half a millimetre to one. A day's growth. Barely there, and it needs doing daily to stay at that length.
Light stubble, one to two millimetres. Two days or so. Visible, still soft in appearance, and the most conservative option.
Designer stubble, around three millimetres. The classic. Enough to give the jaw definition and read as a choice rather than an accident.
Heavy stubble, four to five millimetres. Roughly a week. The most flattering stubble length for most faces, because there is enough density to shape a real cheek line and neckline.
Long stubble, up to ten millimetres. The boundary with a short beard. Softer to touch and it starts needing beard oil.
Most men who like the look settle somewhere between three and five millimetres, and that range is the sweet spot for a stubble beard on almost any face.
Who stubble suits
Almost every face shape, which is why stubble styles are among the most worn beard styles there is.
On a round face, stubble adds subtle definition along the jaw without adding width, which a fuller beard would. On a long face, keep it even rather than heavier at the chin. On a square face it softens the corners slightly. On an oval face it does whatever you want.
It is also the best option for a patchy beard, and better than any full beard for it. At three to five millimetres, gaps that would be obvious in a full beard mostly disappear, because you are looking at texture rather than coverage. Men who cannot grow a full beard often look better in heavy stubble than in anything else.
The real question is skin. Stubble means a blade or a trimmer on your face every two or three days, and if you are prone to irritation that frequency is the thing to watch, not the length.
Growing it
Two to ten days from clean shaven, depending on the length you want.
There is no growing phase to endure, which is part of the appeal. If you are coming from clean shaven, stop shaving, wait until you reach the length you want, then cut the facial hair back to that length and hold it there. Going from clean shaven to a settled stubble beard takes under a week.
Coming down from a full beard, take it in stages rather than straight to three millimetres, so you can see the shape underneath.
Cutting and shaping
The trimmer does the work. A precision trimmer or a beard trimmer with a stubble-range guard, ideally with half-millimetre steps, because the difference between two and three millimetres is very visible at this length.
Set the length. Go over the whole face with the guard, against the grain, so the hairs stand up and get cut evenly. This is the opposite of shaving.
Set the cheek line. Follow your natural growth rather than inventing a line. At stubble length a hard cheek line looks over-engineered, so keep it soft, taking off only what sits clearly above the natural edge.
Set the neckline. Two fingers above the Adam's apple, curving up toward the jaw. Even on stubble this matters, and it is the single thing that separates a stubble beard style from having not shaved.
Tidy the moustache off the lip line.
Every two to three days after that, repeat. A stubble beard takes about three minutes to reset, which is less than shaving clean shaven every morning.
Looking after the skin
This is where stubble differs from a full beard. There is very little hair and a lot of exposed skin, and it is being cut constantly.
Moisturise daily. Stubble does not hold moisture the way a beard does, and dry skin under stubble looks flaky rather than rugged.
If you get irritation, the usual cause is going against the grain too aggressively or using a blunt blade on the neckline. Sharp blades and less pressure fix most of it.
Wash your face rather than your stubble. At this length there is nothing to condition.
What goes wrong
It drifts longer. Two or three days becomes five, then a week, and you are wearing a short beard you did not choose. Keep to the schedule.
The neckline gets skipped. The most common reason stubble reads as unshaven rather than deliberate.
Hard edges. A razor-sharp cheek line on three millimetres of stubble looks strange. Keep the edges softer than you would on a full beard.
Trimming with the grain. The hairs lie down and get missed, leaving the length uneven. Go against the grain at this length.
Choosing the length by eye. A millimetre either way changes the look a lot. If a stubble beard is not sitting right, try a bit longer before deciding the style is wrong for you.

How long does it take to grow stubble?
Two to ten days depending on the stubble length you want. Designer stubble at three millimetres takes most men three or four days from clean shaven.
Does stubble suit a patchy beard?
Yes, better than almost anything else. At three to five millimetres you see texture rather than coverage, so a patchy beard is far less obvious than it would be at full length.
How often do you trim a stubble beard?
Every two to three days to hold the length, plus the neckline. It is a three minute job once it is routine.
Does shaving make stubble grow back thicker?
No. Shaving cuts the hair at its widest point, which makes the regrowth feel coarser, but the hair itself is unchanged in thickness and rate.
Is a stubble beard more or less work than clean shaven?
Slightly less. Clean shaven means daily shaving; a stubble beard means trimming every second or third day. What it is not is no work.
What is the difference between designer stubble and heavy stubble?
Length. Designer stubble is around three millimetres, heavy stubble four to five. Heavy stubble holds a cheek line better and suits most face shapes slightly more.
