A petite goatee is a small, tightly trimmed patch of hair on the chin, usually with a moustache and always with the cheeks bare. It is the most compact member of the goatee family and the least demanding. Set against the rest of the directory, it asks for very little.

How to cut one, in four steps
- Grow it out2 to 3 weeks. You cannot see where your growth is dense until it is in, and shaping early is why most first attempts fail.
- Set the lengthTrim the chin and moustache with a guarded trimmer on dry hair, so it sits at its true length.
- Shave the cheeksDownward, with the grain, short passes and light pressure. Pressing harder gives razor burn, not a closer shave.
- Cut the outlineLast, with a precision trimmer. Work from the outside inward on each side, checking both sides between passes.

What it is
Chin hair only, kept short and contained. Two to three centimetres wide, sitting just below the lower lip and stopping before the jaw.
The moustache is optional. With one it is a very small circle beard; without one it is a compact classic goatee.
The distinguishing feature is restraint. A standard goatee covers the chin and often creeps toward the jaw. A petite goatee stays deliberately small.
Who it suits
Round faces get the most from it. Weight at the chin lengthens the face, and because the shape is small it does that without adding any width.
It is also the easiest entry point into facial hair. If you are unsure whether you suit a beard at all, this takes two or three weeks, needs almost no skill, and shaves off in a minute.
It works on patchy growth, since it uses only the chin, which is where nearly everyone is densest. If your cheeks will not cooperate, this is one of the styles that never asks them to.
Growing it
Two to three weeks. It is one of the quickest styles here.
Grow the chin and moustache in, leave the cheeks alone for the first fortnight so you can see your real growth line, then shave them.
Cutting it
Set the length short, four to six millimetres. The style depends on being tidy rather than substantial.
Decide the width and hold it. Two to three centimetres across suits most faces. Wider and it becomes a standard goatee, which is fine but is a different thing.
Keep the bottom above the jawline. The moment it spreads onto the jaw it stops being petite.
Shave the cheeks properly, with a razor rather than a bare trimmer blade. At this scale the contrast between beard and skin is the whole effect and a rough edge shows.
Neckline as usual, two finger-widths above the Adam's apple. A small goatee does not excuse an untidy neck.
Keeping it
Every two or three days. There is very little hair, so any regrowth around it blurs the shape quickly.
Two minutes each time. This is genuinely one of the lowest-effort defined styles on the site, as long as you do it often.
Moisturise the shaved area.
Where it goes wrong
Letting it grow wider. The commonest slow failure. Each trim takes a bit less and within a month it is an ordinary goatee.
Letting it grow down onto the jaw. Same problem in the other direction.
Soft edges. At this size, vague edges read as unshaven rather than as a style.
Neglecting the neck. Very visible next to a small, tidy shape.
